Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians bestowed their Community Recognition Award to North Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

Kingston Rotary yearly recognizes a local business or organization that serves our community, making it a better place. In the case of North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, it also makes our community and other western communities a safer place.  This year NKF&R was recognized for their efforts to educate the public about the risks of wild land fires, as well as deploying to areas across the West to fight serious fire events.

It might appear that local fire departments only respond to local emergencies.  In fact, they join forces and coordinate across multi-state regions to assist whereever and whenever wild land fires are threatening people and property.  Local emergency personnel volunteer for deployment and local equipment is utilized to join forces from our region.  Local departments are compensated for the costs incurred in these efforts.  In turn, they gain valuable training,  and if similar assistance is needed locally, crews from other departments will come to meet local needs.

Michele Laboda, NKF&R Community Services Specialist, and department members presented a snapshot of the unique conditions created in a number of fire deployments in recent history.  Differences in weather, vegetation, and topography create challenges that are only more threatening as changing climates dictate.  One sobering lesson this past summer came from the Bolt Creek fire off Highway 2 approaching Stevens Pass.  The idea that greatly destructive fires only hit the East side of the Cascades was smashed for good!  That terrain and vegetation is not unlike that on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas.

Crewmembers finished their presentation by sharing how we can help decrease the risks in our area from wild-fire.  Ideas were shared from hardening our homes and property to becoming aware of practices that increase dangers.  Information and assistance in identifying hazards around your home is available by contacting NKF&R.

Congratulations to North Kitsap Fire and Rescue on receiving Kingston North Kitsap Rotary's 2023 Community Recognition Award.
