It was a busy night, Wed, Apr 19, at the joint meeting of Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club Teams. Leading off was a presentation by Emily Froula (r) and Ariana Hurtado.
Hurtado is a student at Kingston High, and a member of the Interact-Key Club there. Froula is Rotary liaison to the Club. They explained a project the Club is involved in to collect bottle caps to recycle in Mexico; the money from recycling supports services for kids with cancer in Mexico. These types of caps - heavy plastic most - are not recycled in the U.S. Water and soda bottle caps, juice container caps, yogurt and cottage cheese container caps. The drive is underway at Kingston High, in coordination with the school's Green Club. It will conclude in late May.
Next up Club President Jackie Baker presented Bill Beaudoin his FIFTH Paul Harris Award, signifying at least $5k in donations to the Rotary Foundation.
Lastly, members heard a presentation from Club Member, and Mexican expat, Jim Dixon. Dixon explained a trip years ago he and his wife took to Mexico. While there they purchased a condo, soon to discover a lot of old people in the condo complex, and this thing called HOA conditions and dues. That discovery led to an Uber ride - yes Uber - into a central Baja peninsula mining town of some 400 residents. There, they purchased a lot and proceeded to built a 2k square foot home, where they now live most of the year. Dixon showed pictures and colorfully described the construction project. He regrets the nearest Rotary Club is 1.5 hours away.
