This just in from Donna, a Coffee Oasis (Pouslbo) trainer.  "E" is a young beneficiary of the Coffee Oasis program:

WHY WE EXIST!!

I went to a HOPE INC celebration for E. at JAK’s Cafe & Espresso. I placed E. at JAK’s because E. wanted some job training but also because E. had some serious health issues. I knew that E. would benefit from learning about wholesome foods & healthy lifestyles from Julie, the owner. Julie quickly took E. under her wing and surpassed all expectations for creating a positive holistic internship experience. During the internship, E. even had the opportunity to help at an evening fundraiser at JAK’s organized by Julie to benefit The Coffee Oasis. E. met lots of Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce members and other folks from the community at that event. Julie networked with community members to help E. in many ways including connecting her with a nutritionist and getting her into a special program at Snap Fitness (pro bono). Julie rallied community members to chip in to provide suitable workout clothing for E. and connected her up with a friend who needed some help so E. could earn a little income on the side during her internship. Julie hosted E's celebration of the completion of her 180-hour internship at JAK’s and prepared a wonderful spread of food. Several community members were present and brought cards and small presents for E. to celebrate her hard work and newly developed skills. At the end Julie presented a special gift to E. from several of the people who E. initially met at the fundraising event. E. was nearly in tears when she opened the large box to discover it contained a laptop and case. Julie had coordinated with Poulsbo PC & Electronics (another of our partner businesses) to find a computer that could be refurbished to meet E's needs for college this fall. This was a wonderful internship experience for E., because not only did Julie hire her on to continue to work at JAK’s but E. also learned new skills and habits that improved her health.

Through his business of Dahlquist's Fine Jewelry, Poulsbo Richard Koven nominated THE COFFEE OASIS for the Jewelers for Children (JFC) Local Grant Program. JFC, a non-profit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999 is dedicated to helping children in need. The recently launched Local Grant Program has set aside $100,000 to fund ten $10,000 grants for local children’s charities around the country. Jewelers were asked to nominate their favorite non-profit. Public voting on the Jewelers for Children Facebook page (www.facebook.com/JewelersforChildren) will determine the top ten vote-getters to receive the grants.

“We were pleased to hear about the program,” says Richard Koven of DAHLQUIST’S FINE JEWELRY. “It was such an easy way to help support the excellent work THE COFFEE OASIS does locally to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate youth of our community. Now, we’re trying to get the word out to the public to vote so THE COFFEE OASIS receives one of these generous grants.”

Voting is simple. Individuals wishing to participate can go the Jewelers for Children Facebook page (www.facebook.com/JewelersforChildren) anytime between October 15 and October 30 click on THE COFFEE OASIS from among the nominees; then encourage others to visit the page and vote, too.

“Pulling together, we can help provide some much needed funding for THE COFFEE OASIS,” Koven says. “One minute of your time, one vote, $10,000. What could be easier!”
