Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians heard from their state legislative representative, Greg Nance, at their evening meeting, Jan 7, on the eve of the Legislature's convening.

While commenting on, and answering questions    about, state, and local, challenges, Nance devoted a good deal of his remarks to his recently completed two-thousand mile run from the headwaters of the Mississippi in northern Minnesota to its far-south mouth in Louisiana.  A 72-day run through ten states.  Each day a marathon  equivalent.  And with the ups and downs of the topography, the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest twice.
And why?  At age 16, a Bainbridge lad, he learned of the loss of his grandpa Charlie.  Overwhelmed by depression he turned to alcohol and painkillers.

"Running saved my life. A daily running ritual helped me overcome depression, meet encouraging friends, and find my path to purpose."

He runs for youth mental health generating proceeds for his Run Far Foundation.

This is not his first "run."  In July 2022, Greg completed his 3,156 mile Run Across America, from New York City to Ocean Shores, WA.

"Nothing is more important to the mental health of young people than a loving family."

According to Greg, running helps young people build resilience.  One of his stories was about as a youth he spent summers at his grandma's in Naches, Mississippi.  At mile 1751 on his Mississippi River run he ran grandma's block.
