Rotary Club and Smiley Foundation Team to Restore Scout Hall

A gift of $14k from the Smiley Charitable Foundation to the Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club is designated as “seed money” to jump-start fundraising for restoration of the Scout Hall in Kingston.  Why this gift?  According to Bob Smiley, whose father’s name, also Bob, is on the Hall, it is “because my father was heavily involved in Scouts.  He was primarily responsible for the scout cabin, which was built in the early ’60’s.  It was built on a handshake deal that Scouts could build there as long as they had an active charter.  When it was built, Scouts were involved in the project, learning skillsets.”  The building is located on the west side of Kola Kole park in Kingston.

By recent action of the Rotary Club’s board, the Club has become a charter organization of the Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 555.  Rotarian Doug Hallock is the Club’s charter partner representative.  Under his guidance a separate committee of scouting alumni of Troop 555 and interested Rotarians has been formed to organize and direct the restoration project.  Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club will be the lead organization in developing matching funds for the Smiley gift as well as in-kind donations.  Hallock says “there will be an outreach to the community, including the many Scouts who have met in the Scout Hall since 1949.”

Since their inception, Rotary International (1905) and Boy Scouts of America (1910) have been partners in serving young people.  The principles and goals of both organizations are closely allied.   Character-building; service to country, to others, and to self; teaching leadership skills; and becoming aware of the world around us-these are all incorporated into the programs and activities of each organization.

Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club President, Bill Maule, said “I am pleased, and proud, that our Club has joined the hundreds of other Rotary Clubs across our country that sponsor Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs.  Both organizations value honor and truthfulness as well as a dedication to service.  It is especially significant for our Club as we have six Eagle Scouts among our members.  They and other Scouting veterans in the Club will have the opportunity to renew associations they had decades ago.”  More than one-hundred merit badges can be earned by scouts, many of which are in areas local Rotarians have expertise and can be of value as counselors on a one-on-one basis.

“The more you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”  - Dr. Seuss.  September is Basic Education and Literacy Month on the Rotary International calendar.  It is a month when Clubs around the world focus on literacy, including joining in projects with their local Interact Clubs.  Kingston North Kitsap Rotary’s Interact Club at Kingston High sets sail with the beginning of another school year Sept 4.

Another beer and wine tent season at Concerts in the Cove is coming to a close.  Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians run the tent eight Saturday evenings each summer at Mike Wallace park as a “fun-raiser” for the community.  The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce presents the entertainment; your local Rotary Club presents the libation.  Rotarian Jerry Tellinghuisen sums up this year’s experience.  “It’s gone by fast.  We’ve been fortunate to have good weather every Saturday.  A highlight of the summer was operating the Rotary beer and wine tent eight-and-a-half hours during the Port’s Centennial celebration July 27.”

August Focus

August is membership and club development month, a time to focus on and appreciate your members, celebrate their devotion to the club and the impact they have made. It's also a time to think about developing strategies around growing your membership. The reason why Rotary is such a successful organization is because it is full of members that have one trait in common - the passion to make a difference in the world. All of us share this passion and it's what drives us to work together.
