Wednesday, Mar 23. It was a busy day at Rotary, as the Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians welcomed District Governor Lorna Curtis, Past District Governor Greg Horn, and Kingston Cares President Phil Merritt. DG Curtis said she was happy to be able to move - semi-freely - from her home in Victoria B.C. to visit her District Clubs in the U.S. She presented Paul Harris awards to Suzanne Jenny (Jenny's 2nd Harris) and to Bill Beaudoin (Beaudoin's 4th Harris). Past Governor Horn presented a certificate of merit to the Club's Immediate Past President Walt Elliott for its contribution to Rotary's worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Horn said when Rotary first took on the challenge in 1985 there were 350k cases. In the last year there were only five in the world. Phil Merritt, President of Kingston Cares updated members on that group's work in the community around food insecurity. The Food4Kids program, for example, facing Covid, was unable to use its usual packing and storage facility, a tribal gym. It found an alternate site in a member garage. It was forced to mask and test kids and volunteers due to Covid. Its community meals program, normally a monthly in-person affair, was forced to distribute as "Grab N' Go." At its height 160 community meals were awarded. Merritt noted 115 meals are now being distributed, and he feels, nowadays, more people in need are being reached by the program. He also cited the huge success of the Little Pantry program. Three such pantries exist in Kingston, stocked with non-perishable items by community members for those in need.
