March is Rotary's "Water and Sanitation" Month

Clean water is a basic human right that many are often denied. There are 2.5 billion people in the world that lack access to improved sanitation and 748 million people that don’t have clean drinking water. Nearly 1400 children die each day from diseases caused by lack of sanitation and unsafe water. When people have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives.

Rotarian's At Work - The Coffee Oasis
With the major construction jobs completed at the Kingston Coffee Oasis, the finishing tasks are in full swing.  Tuesday’s summer-like weather was an opportunity to move some of those efforts outside.  Fredrick Branchflower, Stan Amos, Mark Libby and Chris Gilbreath did their best to help the youth center look a bit more ready for its late spring opening.  The pressure-washing crew joined the ranks of other volunteers who have been working to insure the exterior of the old community center looks clean, safe and welcoming.

Likewise, The Coffee Oasis will continue to depend on the talents of volunteers to work with and support the youth of our community.  At Saturday’s Kingston Community Conversation Coffee Oasis staff again reminded community members that volunteering for our youth positively impacts everyone involved.
Kingston-NK Rotary Announces Satellite Club

When Rotary International was formed in 1905, approximately thirty members “rotated” offices where they met weekly.  Today, Rotary clubs around the world continue that tradition of weekly meetings.  Including ours, in Kingston.  Over the years Rotary Clubs have changed with the times.  Women were invited to become members in 1989.  Attendance standards were relaxed in 2016.  Now, furthering flexibility to become a Rotarian for those who simply cannot attend weekly meetings in the middle of the day, Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club has announced the formation of the KNK Rotary Satellite Club.

Community Dinner - Thank you Volunteers!
Kingston Rotarians, led by Chris Gilbreath, spent most of the day in the Village Green kitchen preparing and serving the Community Dinner on March 8. The theme was a St. Patrick’s Day dinner featuring corned beef and cabbage. Fredrick Branchflower was stationed in the lobby to guide almost 100 diners to the appropriate room.

March is Beer Month!
Enjoy a pint with a friend! Thrifty folks who enjoy a pint now and then take note.  The Kitsap Olympic Ale Trail is open year round.  It’s purpose is to connect “hikers” with 50% off deals at twenty establishments in Kitsap County and beyond.  Here’s how it works.  Go online to either the Apple Store or the Google Store and download the app called “Donor Trail.”  Then click on “Kitsap Olympic Ale Trail.”  From there, select a charity to which benefits should go (half of the Trail Pass cost goes to community organizations), and then purchase a Trail Pass for $20.  The final step is to save money and enjoy.  Hikers have a full year to visit all Trail sites, and they can have more than one Trail going at a time.  All information is located at:  www.kitsapolympicaletrail.com.

Swing for Rotary Golf Challenge
February snowflakes aside, it is not too early to mark your calendar for 2019’s Swing for Rotary golf tournament.  Rotarians are in the community right now soliciting auction items,  sponsorships, and golfers.  This year’s tourney will be Friday, June 21, at White Horse.  Another full field of golfers is anticipated.  After a record-setting 2018 event, proceeds in 2019 will benefit Food for Kids, Kingston High School scholarships, North Kitsap Schools, Senior Meals, Coffee Oasis, Community projects and events, and International projects.  Golfer entry fee of $160 includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, drink tickets, and awards dinner.  Register online at www.knkrotarygolf.net
