Highlights from Oct 2nd Meeting

NKSD Superintendent - Speaker

Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians heard a schools update from Dr. Laurynn Evans, North Kitsap Schools Superintendent, at their October 2 meeting.  According to Dr. Evans, “it has been a fabulous start this school year.”  She should know.  She visited sixty classrooms during the first three days of school.  She thanked Rotarians and the community for passing a $40m capital levy, some of which has already been invested in projects at Wolfe Elementary and Kingston Middle school.  Dr. Evans explained the Choice Academy at Kingston High, described not as an alternative school, but one in which students who don’t want a traditional high school experience, learn.  Choice Academy enrollment has doubled this year, as the District works to retain students through their high school years.  She talked about the robotics program, which matches science, math, and robotics, at Kingston Middle.  Students in robotics learn in a three period block then move into the general student population for other subjects. Every student in the program has his own robot.  Thirty students are enrolled.  Finally, she talked about the new strategic plan for the District, crafted through months of input from various stakeholders.  The new plan is more tailored than its predecessor.  It more tightly defines goals and alignment.  It is centered on improving outcomes for kids.  Its vision is “Every NKSD student is a confident, competent, creative, and compassionate person who is ready for a world yet to be imagined.”

Rotarian's of the Month

Kingston North Kitsap President Bill Maule awarded Rotarian of the Month honors to Karen Gibson and Alice Amas for their years of leadership of the annual Swing for Rotary Golf Tournament. Honors were granted “in arrears” according to Maule, who has waited since July, just after this year’s tournament, to bestow the awards, waiting for both ladies to be present together at a meeting.  Pins for the honorees will also need be awarded in arrears, as Maule did not find them in his pocket this week.
