State AG visits Kingston-North Kitsap Club

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson was the guest speaker at the July 17 meeting of the Kingston-North Kitsap Rotary Club.  Invited guests included Kingston Kiwanians.  Ferguson explained that he was formerly a member of the King County, WA Council.  In that role, he frequently interacted with members of the community.  Such is not the case in his current role.  So, to meet, and learn from, members of communities across the state, he has made it his mission to visit Rotary clubs.  To date, he has visited some 163 of them.  He explained that the Attorney General’s office is the legal firm for the state, serving its agencies and its people.  It provides legal advice to state agencies and legal representation to state residents in cases such as consumer protection. Consumer protection is self-funding as all money recovered in the form of settlements and jury awards is returned to the agency and the state.  The largest such suit, against opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharmaceuticals, is pending trial next February.  Ferguson noted there is a twenty-seven day supply of opioids for every man, woman, and child in the state.  More than six-hundred lawyers work in thirteen offices around the state, more than one-hundred of whom work solely on child neglect and abuse.

Bainbridge Island Wine Trail
It is time to take a hike on the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail (BIWT)!  It has officially launched and we are so excited!!

Hikers along the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail will make stops at six Bainbridge Island wineries where you will receive a one time discount of 50% off of two flights of wine.  What a great opportunity to explore the amazing wineries on Bainbridge Island, save money, give back to the community, and have fun!

How to get started:
  1. Download the free Donor Trail App (picture of dog) from the Google Store or the Apple Store (if you do not have it already)
  2. Search for and click on “Bainbridge Island Wine Trail.”
     3.  Press "Buy the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail".
Follow the instructions to sign up

     4.  Buy a $30 Trail Pass using Credit Card

     5.  Hit the trail and take pride in the fact that you are helping
           humanity!

Even if you do not want to purchase a trail pass, you can still download the Donor Trail App and peruse the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail at no cost.  You will only be asked to sign up once you continue on to purchase a trail pass.

Today marks our “soft” launch of the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail; however, now that the trail is “active”, anyone with the Donor Trail App downloaded will see it!  So if you are having fun hiking, make sure to tell your friends and family!!

The Donor Trail Committee is asking for feedback on your trail experience!  Please be aware that many updates/additions are still in the works as we speak for the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail.  It is a work in progress, but the foundation is there and the wine trail is ready for hikers!!

You can visit the website at donortrail.com/bainbridgeislandwinetrail.  Note the website will soon have a new landing page, which is something the Wine Alliance is working on.  That will allow for all of the icons on the page and verbiage to be consistent with a "wine" trail and not an "ale" trail.  Once we have the new landing page and any "kinks" worked out, we will proceed forward with our official launch, which involve a spot on King 5 news.

How exciting that we have two trails up and running now!  A BIG thank you to all of those folks who made it happen.  Now it is a true club effort to get the word out about our trails and to strengthen the relationship with all of our partners and beneficiaries.

Stay tuned for upcoming date for Donor Trail Committee Meeting (includes Kitsap-Olympic Ale Trail and Bainbridge Island Wine Trail)!
Rotary Roundup

At almost ninety years of age, one would expect to be stepping down from civic and community activities.  Not Bill Maule.  He stepped up.  Effective July 1, Bill became President of the Kingston-North Kitsap Rotary Club.  He was born in California in 1930.  An Eagle Scout, Bill graduated from Pomona College with a BA in Zoology.  While at Pomona, he met his future-wife, Seattle-born Sue Merrick.  He served as U.S. Army Infantry officer for two years, including time in Korea immediately following the armistice.  While pursuing an MA at University of Minnesota, he learned that the State Department’s Foreign Service was seeking generalists.  He applied and became a Foreign Service Officer in 1956.  He and Sue served in Brussels, Baghdad, Port-au-Prince, Vienna, Beirut, Montreal, London, and again in Montreal as U.S. Consul-General.  His service in Washington D.C. included an assignment as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services.  He retired in 1988 with the rank of Minister Counselor.  Bill has been a member of Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club since its founding in 2004.  His hobbies include travel (plans to attend his fifth Rotary International Convention this year), philately (look it up), and bird watching.  When the word “Rotarian” comes to mind, there’s a picture, too, of Bill Maule, Kingston-North Kitsap Club’s President for Rotary year 2019-2020.

The 4th of July Fun Run and Doggy Dash, a Kingston tradition, is on the move in many ways.  This year there were more runners, more volunteers, and more sponsors.  A record 308 runners registered for this year’s event.  Approximately fifty volunteers worked to register, guide, provide safety, and give recognition and refreshments to the runners.  Twenty-six area sponsors helped make the event possible, with funding for t-shirts and more than 500 prizes, from running shoes to pizza, muffins, and doggy treats.  The event continues to strengthen the connection between Kingston area schools and the greater Kingston community.  It is jointly organized by the Kingston High School Athletic Booster Club and Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club.  You can mark the date for next year: nine o’clock sharp, July 4, 2020.

Kingston-North Kitsap Rotarians are at it again, running the beer and wine garden every summer Saturday evening in support of Concerts in the Cove.  Beer and wine are picked up about 4:15 p.m., delivered to the tent at Mike Wallace Park about 4:30 p.m., and readied for concert goers about 5:00 p.m.  The garden is open until the last concert note has sounded about eight o’clock.  A loyal group of Rotarians gather every Saturday to open the garden, set up tables and chairs, take them down, and pack things up. While the garden is open they check ID’s, sell drink tickets, pour drinks, clean up and enjoy conversation and music with the patrons.  Among the “regular” volunteers every Saturday are Jerry Tellinghuisen and Randy Monlux (coordinators), Helen Ralph, Sally Christy, Doug Hallock, De’ MacKinnon, Chris Gilbreath, and Fredrick Branchflower.  Operating the beer and wine garden is another contribution by your Kingston North Kitsap Rotary club to making this a better place to live.  Enjoy.
