April is Rotary's "Maternal and Child Health" Month
At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary International provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Their projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.
Anne Thomas, the founder of the Laos/Cambodian Literacy Education project has visited out Rotary Club four times in the last 6 years.
Their mission is to enable the members of indigenous communities, both men and women, to effectively and equitably participate in decision making, allowing them to choose their own future, in particular, to assure their rights in sustainably managing, using and developing their land and natural resources that form the basis of their livelihoods and culture.
Our Rotary club has been a supporter of this project for the last five years. Anne recently returned from her visit in Ratanakiri Provence in Laos and has shared some of her photos with us.
This is how the Kavet used to dress, with ivory earplugs from elephants in their ears and dress very colorfully. In Laos they have kept up the weaving tradition, but many of the ethnic minorities in Cambodia have lost these skills during the long war years.

February snowflakes aside, it is not too early to mark your calendar for 2019’s Swing for Rotary golf tournament. Rotarians are in the community right now soliciting auction items, sponsorships, and golfers. This year’s tourney will be Friday, June 21, at White Horse. Another full field of golfers is anticipated. After a record-setting 2018 event, proceeds in 2019 will benefit Food for Kids, Kingston High School scholarships, North Kitsap Schools, Senior Meals, Coffee Oasis, Community projects and events, and International projects. Golfer entry fee of $160 includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, drink tickets, and awards dinner. Register online at www.knkrotarygolf.net.
With the major construction jobs completed at the Kingston Coffee Oasis, the finishing tasks are in full swing. Tuesday’s summer-like weather was an opportunity to move some of those efforts outside. Fredrick Branchflower, Stan Amos, Mark Libby and Chris Gilbreath did their best to help the youth center look a bit more ready for its late spring opening. The pressure-washing crew joined the ranks of other volunteers who have been working to insure the exterior of the old community center looks clean, safe and welcoming.
Likewise, The Coffee Oasis will continue to depend on the talents of volunteers to work with and support the youth of our community. At Saturday’s Kingston Community Conversation Coffee Oasis staff again reminded community members that volunteering for our youth positively impacts everyone involved.
When Rotary International was formed in 1905, approximately thirty members “rotated” offices where they met weekly.Today, Rotary clubs around the world continue that tradition of weekly meetings. Including ours, in Kingston.Over the years Rotary Clubs have changed with the times.Women were invited to become members in 1989.Attendance standards were relaxed in 2016.Now, furthering flexibility to become a Rotarian for those who simply cannot attend weekly meetings in the middle of the day, Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club has announced the formation of the KNK Rotary Satellite Club.
Kingston Rotarians, led by Chris Gilbreath, spent most of the day in the Village Green kitchen preparing and serving the Community Dinner on March 8. The theme was a St. Patrick’s Day dinner featuring corned beef and cabbage. Fredrick Branchflower was stationed in the lobby to guide almost 100 diners to the appropriate room.
