March is Rotary's "Water and Sanitation" Month

Clean water is a basic human right that many are often denied. There are 2.5 billion people in the world that lack access to improved sanitation and 748 million people that don’t have clean drinking water. Nearly 1400 children die each day from diseases caused by lack of sanitation and unsafe water. When people have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives.

Female surveillance officer for WHO pushes through gender-related obstacles to help eradicate polio from Pakistan

Dr. Ujala Nayyar dreams, both figuratively and literally, about a world that is free from polio. Nayar, the World Health Organization in Pakistan’s Punjab province, says she often imagines the outcome of her work in her sleep.
 
In her waking life, she leads a team of health workers who crisscross Punjab to hunt down every potential incidence of poliovirus, testing sewage and investigating any reports of paralysis that might be polio. Pakistan is one of just two countries that continue to report cases of polio caused by the wild virus. 
 
In addition to the challenges of polio surveillance, Nayyor faces substantial gender-related barriers that, at times, hinder her team's ability to count cases and take environmental samples. From households to security checkpoints, she encounters resistance from men. But her tactic is to push past the barriers with a balance of sensitivity and assertiveness.

Congratulations Sally & Bill!
Our club moved incrementally closer to our goal of $100,000 all time giving with the donations of Sally Christy and Bill Maule.  Sally received her 3rd Paul Harris pin and Bill received his 6th Paul Harris pin.  Bill encouraged all members to work towards becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

Interact, in their search for an international project, began corresponding with Days for Girls last year.  Days for Girls is an international charity that provides feminine hygiene products for impoverished girls globally, mostly in Africa.  Headquartered in Bellingham, WA, it has an annual budget of $3 million and receives high ratings by the organizations that evaluate charities.
 
Poulsbo Days for Girls is the local chapter.  Their forte is manufacturing the reusable products in "Sew-Ins" and then assembling and shipping them out as "kits".
