June 5, 2019. The day Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians heard from Jack Simonson, the newly installed principal at Kingston High School. Before going into administration, Simonson was for eighteen years an English teacher. Prior to his moving to KHS, he was Assistant Principal at North Kitsap High. This role, at Kingston, was of interest because KHS is small - 680 students this school year, projected to be 580 next year. “It’s possible to know every kid in the school, not just the ones that act out,” Simonson said. From the perspective of North, “they’re jealous of the Kingston relationship with it’s community, the amazing campus - how gorgeous it is, and how proud kids are to be from Kingston.” With declining enrollment comes the loss of teachers, 3.5 next year. There will be fiscal challenges next year. Simonson is looking for volunteers - someone to volunteer to serve as volunteer coordinator, and also volunteers for campus security. Kingston High’s most pressing needs are for funding of curriculum materials, athletic facilities - specifically a press box at the football stadium, and replacements for some furniture in the building that has exceeded its lifespan.
