A long-term goal of Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club is to get a much-needed, centrally-located sports and recreation center, including a YMCA, built in North Kitsap. While members are working tirelessly to move that project, NKU (North Kitsap United), forward, they are also addressing the immediate need to restore today’s playfields to playing condition. By teaming with NK School District, youth sports associations, and other action-minded residents, Rotarians tackled rehabbing the fields at Kingston Middle School Oct 5. School staff and 19 volunteers filled low spots, aerated, power-raked, seeded and spread four dump trucks of topsoil on the fields. They also cleared the dugout areas of blackberry and tree branches. Future work parties will remove the grass from the softball infield and baseball base paths in preparation for spring sports. Along with a shoutout to School District Staff and the volunteers, thanks goes to Vern’s topsoil for their donation of soil, and Cup & Muffin for supplying refreshments.
