Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians Make for a Brighter Christmas in North Kitsap
This is the second year of a Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club project, led by Satellite Club members, to brighten the holidays of folks in North Kitsap who are shut-ins, by themselves, elderly, and who may not otherwise have a greeting from someone that says, "We care Happy holidays."  This year's goal was to deliver 1500 handwritten holiday cards.  As of Dec 14, 2,518 cards had been prepared for delivery. Here Rotarians Rae Winn (left), Brian Stenehjem, and Emily Froula at work sorting and prepping the cards.
Folks in places like Martha & Mary, Village Green Senior Center, Liberty Shores, Brookdale, the Retsil Veterans Home, and others will receive the holiday love. And with the help of a $1k grant and $200 in coupons from the Poulsbo Home Depot, the Rotary elves will deliver poinsettias, wreaths, cards and trees.  Here, David Winn, Satellite Club President, "shops" for the joy-giving items.
In addition, 50 poinsettias, 50 advent calendars, and 50 Hershey's kiss bags were delivered to ShareNet.  The holiday card and gift project puts a "wrap" on Kingston North Kitsap Club activities for the year.  It has been an active, fruitful, and productive year, with many Rotary hands making good in the North Kitsap community.

Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians Celebrate at Their Annual Party
Santa rode in with a sleigh full of fun, not-so-white-elephant gifts, and annual awards at the Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club's annual holiday party at Kingston's Village Green Community Center Dec 15.The white elephant gift exchange yielded some real treasures, as conducted by Sheriff, and Club President-Elect, Jackie Wood.
Immediate Past President Walt Elliott awarded Club honors to several members, who, during Walt's term distinguished themselves.  David and Rae Winn were honored with the Rea Mowry Fellowship Award, named in honor of a longtime, and influential, Club member. Rae and David received their award from Elliott.
Ron Carter received the President's Service Award for his role handling Club communication.
The most prestigious of awards, Rotarian of the Year, went to Doug Hallock for his enduring efforts and significant accomplishment leading the renovation of the Scout Hall in Kingston.  The Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club sponsors Scouts and the Scout Hall.
The holiday party served as the Club's last official meeting of 2021, a year that began virtually, in terms of meeting conduct, and ended with fully-vaccinated, maskless, happy Rotarians sharing and celebrating what they do best:  have fun and friendship, while making the community, and the world, a better place.  Thanks to Walt Elliott and current President Chris Gilbreath for their leadership throughout the year.  The list of Club good is long and lasting.

Poulsbo Fire Cares

“The goal is to connect with people; build relationships.”  That is what Poulsbo Fireman Dave Musselman told Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians at their Dec 8 meeting.  Musselman was speaking about Poulsbo’s Poulsbo Fire Cares program.  Along with Poulsbo’s Housing, Health and Human Services Director, Kim Hendrickson, Musselman described a program, modeled after one in Port Angeles, that provides outreach to people in crisis.  There are some sixteen such programs operating in the State of Washington.

Simply put, when a 911 call is received, when there is no need for police response, Poulsbo Fire Cares - one unit consisting of Musselman and a community support specialist - reaches out to listen, to hear the need, then provide referrals to outside social service agencies such as Fishline, Catholic Community Services, YWCA, etc.

Poulsbo Fire Cares went into business in January 2021.  To date it has helped more than 300 people, half of which were seniors, half with mental health issues.  The goal is to divert from hospitals - saving thousands of dollars - and jail.  Common calls involve those feeling suicidal, older adults who are disoriented, those injured from drinking, the homeless, and people feeling lonely.

Moving forward, it is hoped the program can be expanded beyond Poulsbo to involve North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Bainbridge Fire, thus serving the entire North Kitsap and Bainbridge Communities.

About connecting with people, Hendrickson, the Housing, Health and Human Services Director, said it is sometimes a long process when rarely the first approach is successful.  She said “sometimes it takes a fifth or sixth approach where a person says, yes, I can use your help.”

The Wreaths Are Up

Look around Kingston.  The holiday wreaths are up.  Sixty of them, adorned with ornaments and colorful bows.  The wreaths went up Sat, Nov 26, under the leadership of Kingston North Kitsap Rotarian Kris Libby.  Libby is a member of the Community Beautification Committee, and was also the lead on summer flower baskets in our community.  Here is Kris smiling in the rain as volunteers hang the wreaths.

Wherever community needs are to be found - basket hanging, wreath hanging included - you will find Rotarians in action.  Take Rotarian Stan Mack, for example.  He's a Kingston Cares lead on Kingston's Severe Weather Shelter.  While the wreaths are colorfully displayed, Mother Nature can give us some mighty cold nights.  The Kingston Severe Weather Shelter at Village Green is a welcome relief for those who are homeless.  Stan reports there is an urgent need for volunteers at the shelter this winter.  Go to kingstoncares.org to sign up.
